What are the similarities between Lexile measures and Fountas & Pinnell levels?

Last Updated: May 31, 2017 01:03PM EDT
There are similarities when comparing the two leveling methodologies:
  • Both examine some of the same text characteristics including sentence complexity, familiarity of vocabulary, decoding demands of words and structural supports such as repetition and patterning.
  • Both also take into account teacher judgements, but in different ways. Fountas & Pinnell uses teacher judgments to rate individual books and assign them specific Fountas & Pinnell levels. As part of the development of the algorithm used to determine the Lexile measure of a text, teachers’ judgments were compared with student performance on the same texts to identify the text characteristics that best predicted both teacher judgments and student performance. As a result, the Lexile Analyzer directly incorporates the collective wisdom of early-grades educators when calculating new Lexile text measures.
